Counts’s practice spans performance, film, digital video, and sound, often merging documentary, fiction, and self-portraiture. Her MFA thesis film Flower Child (2014), inspired by Chris Marker’s La Jetée, explores her transition from playwright to filmmaker, the cultural legacy of the 1960s, and her student activism at USC. The film extends the journey of her semi-biographical play Flower Child, commissioned by New York Theatre Workshop. Her dramatic comedy Hedy Understands Anxiety received the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award from the Kennedy Center, and Dramatic Publishing Company publishes her plays.
